On 24 November 2025, ITEM – the Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross border cooperation and Mobility of Maastricht University – together with the UM Brussels Hub organised a workshop in Brussels entitled “40 years of Schengen in times of border controls”. The event focused on the joint ITEM–TEIN study “The revised Schengen Borders Code – an ex-post evaluation in times of border controls”, which analyses the impact of internal border controls on cross-border regions.
The NKE–CESCI research group, as a member of the TEIN network, contributed to the report with a case study on the Hungarian–Austrian border section, examining how prolonged border controls influence societal perceptions and affect local cross-border cooperation.
The report and the summary of the Brussels event are available on the ITEM website.
